Conner Grist, 19, was sentenced to 40 years for first-degree murder in Paragould, Arkansas. The conviction followed an extensive investigation into the March 2024 killing of 18-year-old Justin Bateson.

Paragould, Arkansas - Second Judicial District Prosecuting Attorney Sonia F. Hagood announced that Conner Grist, 19, was found guilty on Thursday, Feb. 6, of committing murder in the first degree.

Circuit Judge Randy Philhours followed the recommendations of a Greene County jury and sentenced Grist to 40 years in the Arkansas Department of Corrections. Greene County Deputy Prosecuting Attorneys Wesley Watts, Bradley McBride and Adam Butler prosecuted the case.

During the trial, jurors heard from detectives with the Paragould Police Department, forensic experts from the Arkansas Crime Lab, and local witnesses who provided critical testimony regarding the events of March 2024, when the body of 18-year-old Justin Bateson was discovered in a vacant lot on Magnolia Drive.

"We are committed to seeking justice not only for the victims of senseless violence in Greene County but also for the families left behind," said Deputy Prosecutor Watts. "This verdict sends a strong message that violent crime will not go unpunished. We thank the jury members for their service and their dedication to upholding justice."

The conviction stems from Grist’s arrest on March 15, 2024, following an extensive investigation by the Paragould Police Department. "The work done by the Paragould Police Department, especially the Criminal Investigation Division, was outstanding," said Deputy Prosecutor Watts. "This verdict is a direct result of their tireless efforts and meticulous investigation."

The investigation began on March 12, when Paragould 911 Dispatch received a report of a deceased individual found in a vacant lot on Magnolia Drive. Initially, the identity of the victim was unknown. However, within three days, the Paragould Police Department identified the victim as Justin Bateson, leading to Grist’s interview, confession, and arrest, as well as the recovery of the firearm used in the crime.

"I want to extend my sincere gratitude to our law enforcement partners," said Deputy Prosecutor McBride. "In particular, Detective Lieutenant Robert Sexton, Detective Sergeant Jacob Higdon, Detective Corporal Tron Beesley, and Detective Corporal Aaron Gamber of the Paragould Police Department for their exemplary work in solving this case."

This conviction represents a significant step toward justice in the Greene County community and underscores the commitment of local law enforcement to combat violent crime.
